About Us

Susan

I was born in Tasmania, where I spent my younger years. Growing up amongst a rugged landscape, where the rhythms of life are omnipresent. The ebb and flow of warmth and coolness, light and darkness, maintain an equilibrium in all living things.

My aim is to evoke atmosphere, mysticism and elusiveness while referencing the natural phenomena of space and light. The duplicitous qualities of glass make it  my material of choice. Like the land and sea scapes of this distant southern island, glass can be beautiful yet treacherous and has qualities of strength and yet fragile to human intervention.

Through my art practice, I like to delve into philosophical juxtapositions found in the natural world by creating works that drift between an aesthetic that is suggestive of a mood or emotion and form that may be imaginary or based on known, but not always recognised, natural structures. In turn, this leads to the creation of curious and at time whimsical works.

I came to pastel painting later in life, after a long career in process improvement through business analysis. All this left brain thinking gave me little time to dabble in the arts. I had a number of attempts at retirement  but soon found myself getting bored and returned to the workforce. Then one day, encouraged by my wife Susan, I attended a drawing course.  This sparked something in me and pretty soon I was keen to add colour to my drawings and before long I was hooked on pastels and had found something to keep me occupied in retirement.

I have a tendency towards realism in my work but am trying to develop a more impressionistic aesthetic. I have not yet settled on any particular genre, and paint an eclectic range of subject matter.

I look forward to sharing my latest work with you and welcome your comments and suggestions. I will from time to time show images of works at different stages of painting.
